The history of City Church begins when two fellowships were started in the city in the 1980s. In 1993, those churches came together to form what is now City Church. Today we number about 1100 people over our seven locations throughout Aberdeen City Centre and the Shire. We also have “planted” a number of other churches in the North East of Scotland and beyond.
We would say that we are an evangelical church (which means that we are part of the mainstream church in the UK), and that we are charismatic (which means that we believe that the Holy Spirit is at work today in the same way he was in Biblical times). We are in good relationships with the other churches in Aberdeen and are members of the Evangelical Alliance.
In September 2016 we joined the Vineyard family of churches. Vineyard Churches is a growing, movement of healthy churches with whom we have been deeply connected relationally for many years. There are over 1500 Vineyard churches in many nations around the world. We are very excited to now become officially part of the family.
SPREADING LIFE TOGETHER
In the last few years, we’ve been on a remarkable journey and CITYCHURCH has grown significantly as a result. Lots of people, many of whom have had no previous connection with any church, have joined the family and begun a new relationship with God. This has been extraordinarily exciting and is exactly what we hoped would happen, but had left us with a space issue most Sundays.
one church : many places – we are one family sharing a common mission but meeting in multiple locations
We believe that God has called us to spread out as we grow. We sense that God is asking us to begin new expressions of our church in many places across the North East of Scotland. In October 2011 we became one church meeting in multiple places on a Sunday, and we have added several new sites over the last few years. Our 10am and 7pm meetings in Gilcomston Park (which is the only building that we own) were the original services. We then began meeting too in St Machar Academy. January 2013 saw the launch of a new expression in Stonehaven and in September of that year we began a service in Ellon. A year after that we launched an expression in Inverurie. September 2016 sees the launch of 2 new expressions of our church in Laurencekirk and Kingswells. Please see our Sites & Services tab above to find out more, see what’s happening and get directions.
All our services have the same great worship that we’re used to and a similar talk. Morning services have the fun-and-action-packed adventure that is M.A.D. (our Making a Difference children’s ministry). No matter which service you choose, you’ll still receive a warm welcome and know that you have come to CITYCHURCH.
Why are we doing this?
- We believe God is asking us to
- Because people matter
- It’s a strategic alternative to bigger and bigger buildings
